Claudia Montoya receives the LAMP CHC's 11th Annual Awards of Merit

June 8, more than 300 people gathered at LAMP to celebrate their dedicated community builders - the 10 Award Winners. Claudia Montoya, a CultureLink Settlement Worker based at Mimico Library received this prestigious honour.

When the Ceremony's MC Alicia Kay Markson announced her name, a longlasting wave of cheers and applauds overwhelmed the venue. Here's what the people at Lakeshore area have to say about Claudia:

"Claudia Montoya, a settlement worker is shaking up the Mimico community with love and devoted attention. One of her program participants says that "through Mrs. Montoya, the Mimico Library has become a gathering space of warm human friendship, as well as a learning centre, both academic and cultural. Claudia works for Culturelink and provides settlement services out of the Mimico Library. She is transforming the culture of that library according to Mimico Centennial Library head , Neil Marlow. In his words ' the library is more like the community's living room now.'Claudia is full of compassion, always relentless and resourceful for her newcomer clients.

Claudia approaches her work with passion and enthusiasm and is grateful to the country that accepted her and her family five years ago. She can't go very far down the street without someone stopping to talk to her.  Because of her influence learning Spanish has become in style at the Library. To date she has served more than 600 participants, made thousands of referrals, co-ordinated 46 workshops and started up some peer support groups for newcomers. There is even an English conversation class that has people really excited. To Claudia everyone is family. Her positive energy is contagious.

Just last Saturday Claudia was recognized by a Toronto Women's Centre as an important  Spanish Latin Leader. A few days ago she got another award from the Richmond Hill United Church for her work with Children and youth.

And tonight LAMP pays tribute to Claudia with a well earned Award of Merit.

Claudia Montoya, a passionate community builder."
